Phil Canning has started as a 15 year old heavy equipment apprentice and was promoted through all elements and levels of international businesses with 13 years as CEO and board director.
As a CEO, Phil is a proven leader with a track record of more than tripling the size of a large industrial business (from ~AUD $85m to ~AUD $250m) through innovation and building of new market segments while maintaining an average annual return on investment of 17% for his 13 year tenure. This included managing through the GFC in 2008/9 and the oil, gas and mining downturn in 2015 and the establishment of effective risk management strategies that led to sustained profitable growth through innovation, and a hardening of revenue streams that have withstood economic adversity.
Throughout 2019/20 Phil has been consulting on three major projects at industry Board level.
Phil also has deep expertise in people development and team building, optimising organisational structures and setting up and managing complex business and project finance arrangements.
Phil Canning has extensive experience and knowledge of all aspects power systems, distributed and renewable energy, heavy automotive and mining infrastructure. He has operated at all levels of senior management, CEO and a board director in managing all aspects of large and complex technical businesses.
He is a specialist in delivering and project managing all phases of large and complex mechanical and electrical engineering businesses including:
Design, construction and management of power generation facilities, including renewable, hybrid, gas/diesel and grid integration
Deep operational skills in the operation of Australian energy markets, including operating in the NEM and trading of wholesale gas and electricity
Extensive experience in integrating various sources of energy into grids to maintain reliable supply in commercial settings
Experience in building business cases for, and implementation of, remote energy generation and distribution for mining and other operations
Many years’ experience in positioning and managing EPCM projects in the mining, marine, defence and other commercial settings
Significant experience of formulating and managing large industrial rental arrangements often with complex contractual and asset management demands
Substantial experience in design and manufacturing heavy automotive vehicles
Long term experience in advising various state-based EPA’s site-specific emissions and developing and optimising solutions to reduce carbon emissions of Power Generation, Mining and Automotive. This includes hybrid power and alternative fuels such as hydrogen.
